YCSA provides a free counselling service for young people at our offices in Pollokshields and in various schools city-wide. We offer support based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Person Centred Therapy (PCT) approaches.

What Is CBT?

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is a talking therapy that has been proven to help treat a wide range of emotional and physical health conditions in adults, young people and children including anxiety, depression, and OCD. CBT looks at how we think about a situation and how this thinking affects the way we act. In turn our actions can then affect how we think and feel. The therapist and client work collaboratively together in helping to change the client’s behaviours, their thinking patterns, or both.

CBT is a goal orientated therapy where the client and therapist work together in helping the client towards achieving their goals. CBT involves hard work not only in session but in between sessions. This includes homework tasks that are set each week for the client, which are a key part of its success. CBT is a time limited approach and the number of sessions required for each young person depends on the client goals and issues. Often this will be between five to 20 weekly sessions lasting 50 minutes each.

What Is PCT?

Person-centred therapy revolves around the belief that the client is the main authority on how to deal with, and address, their own experiences and that he/she is fully capable of achieving their own potential for growth. PCT believes that every individual has the internal means they need for growth and that the counselling objectives are achieved by the therapist providing the three ‘core conditions’ of unconditional positive regard, empathy and congruence which help provide a therapeutic climate that promotes growth to occur.

What Is Counselling?

Counselling is the opportunity to talk things over with a skilled listener who will listen to what is being said without judgement. The counsellor will not give advice but may offer options to a problem or offer new ideas for coping. This can help the client make better sense of their feelings and also empower them to make positive changes.

Is It Confidential?

Our services are completely confidential. This means that we won’t pass on any personal information about you which would lead to other people knowing that you use, or have used, our service or what you have talked about with your counsellor.

However if your Counsellor believes that you may be at risk of harm to yourself or another person they may talk to you about contacting other appropriate professionals on your behalf.

Our cognitive behavioural therapists adhere to the BABCP (British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy) code of ethics. Our person-centred therapists adhere to the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy).
